Section 21 abolition — what actually changes on day one?

Trying to get my head around commencement. On the switch-on date, do all existing ASTs convert to periodic automatically, or is there a transition window? My solicitor is being cagey and I don't want to be the landlord who serves an invalid notice on week one.
