Do I need a written tenancy agreement?
Yes — a written statement of terms is required and protects you in any dispute.

Overview
A tenancy can exist without a written agreement, but every UK regime now requires the landlord to give the occupier a written statement of terms, and disputes are decided on documents. Wales requires the written statement within 14 days of occupation.
Practical guidance
- Use an agreement written for your country and the current regime, not an old template.
- Have every landlord and tenant sign, and keep an audit trail of the signatures.
- Re-issue the statement when terms change rather than relying on informal agreement.
