Overview

The Immigration Act 2014 requires landlords in England to check that every adult who will occupy the property as their only or main home has the right to rent. The scheme does not apply in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Practical guidance

  • Check original documents in the holders presence or use the Home Office online service with a share code.
  • Record the date of the check and keep copies for the tenancy plus one year.
  • Diarise follow-up checks where permission is time-limited.
