Overview

Selective licensing lets a council designate an area where every privately rented home needs a licence, usually to tackle low housing demand or antisocial behaviour. Schemes run for up to five years and are renewed or replaced regularly.

Practical guidance

  • Postcodes matter — one side of a street can be in scope and the other out.
  • Licence conditions are enforceable in their own right; breaching them is an offence.
  • Re-check at each renewal date rather than assuming last years answer still holds.
