Overview
An ombudsman investigates complaints about service failure and can order apologies, works and compensation. Agents must already belong to one; private landlords in England will be required to join the new landlord ombudsman under the Renters' Rights Act 2025.
Legal requirements
- Decisions are binding on the member once accepted by the complainant.
Practical guidance
- Deal with complaints in writing, within your own published timescales, before they escalate.
This wiki entry is general information for UK landlords and letting agents, not legal advice. Rules differ across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland — check your local requirements or take advice before acting.
